Science Textbook Adoption Process

PUBLIC NOTICE - May 14, 2024

THE SCHOOL BOARD OF OKALOOSA COUNTY, FLORIDA will conduct a Public Hearing pursuant to §§ 1006.283 and 1006.40, Florida Statutes to consider the recommended adoption of the following instructional materials for Science classes.  

The following materials are being recommended, from the state approved instructional materials list, pending budget allowance:

  • Elementary Grades K – 5

    • McGraw-Hill – Recommended for Adoption

    • Accelerate Learning

    • Savvas

    • Discovery Education

  • Middle Grades 6-8 Earth/Space Science, Life Science, and Physical Science

The public is invited to preview the materials online via the Okaloosa County School District website. The direct link to the preview materials is https://www.okaloosaschools.com/page/science-textbook-adoption. Printed copies of the student texts being proposed for adoption are also available in the Office of Curriculum and Instruction located at the School District’s Central Administration Complex, located at 202-A Highway 85 North, Niceville, Florida. The public may make appointments to review these instructional materials by contacting Ryan Gore at (850) 833-4208. 

The Public Hearing will be conducted during the School Board’s regular meeting on June 10, 2024, at 6:15 p.m., or soon thereafter as the matter may be heard. The meeting will be conducted at the School District’s Central Administration Complex located at 202 Highway 85 North, Niceville, Florida, in the Training Room. This meeting is open to the press and public. Those members of the public wishing to comment on the instructional materials recommended for adoption may appear at the Public Hearing and will be heard. 

Any interested party who decides to appeal any decision made by the Okaloosa County School Board with respect to any matter considered during this meeting, will need a record of the proceedings and, for such purpose, may need to ensure that a verbatim record of the proceedings is made, which record includes the testimony and evidence upon which the appeal is to be based. This notice does not constitute consent by the School Board for the introduction or admission of otherwise inadmissible or irrelevant evidence, nor does it authorize challenges or appeals not otherwise allowed by law.

The Okaloosa County School District is currently examining materials for adoption to be used in elementary, middle, and high school science classes.  The textbook adoption committees have narrowed the publishers to the top 2 for each grade level or course.  

Okaloosa County will be hosting a meet and greet for parents, teachers, and members of the public that wish to come and speak with the top 2 publishers in each grade level or course.  This meeting will be held on Thursday, February 29th from 4:00 – 5:30 pm in the training room of the Central Administration Complex in Niceville.  Anyone is welcome to attend and we look forward to seeing you there!

Science Textbook Adoption Meeting Notice

The Okaloosa County School District is currently examining materials for adoption to be used in elementary, middle, and high school science classes.  The elementary and secondary committees will be reviewing the materials listed below to determine two finalists for each grade span or course.  Links and login information are available for teachers, parents, and members of the public wishing to review the materials being evaluated.  Public input can be received by clicking on and completing the Community Feedback Form.
