We care about the health of your children...
- We offer only low-fat and non-fat milk products.
- We serve reduced sugar and whole grain cereals at breakfast.
- We are limiting the use of white sugars and white flours.
- Our “à la carte” specials limit the fat, sodium and sugar and contain no trans fats.
- All schools offer fresh vegetables and fruit daily.
- We have eliminated caffeine and soda from elementary and middle school cafeterias and vending machines.
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2005 gives solid, research-based advice on food and physical activity choices for health.
The Dietary Guidelines describe a healthy diet as one that:
- Emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products.
- Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts.
- Is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt (sodium), and added sugars.
Daily Recommendations (based on a 2,000 calorie diet):
Fruits and Vegetables: 2 cups of fruit and 2½ cups of vegetables
Grains: 5 ounces of whole grain foods
Milk: 3 cups of fat-free or low-fat milk
Meats / Beans: 5 ounces of lean meats
Don't forget:
- Say NO to trans fats;
- Keep salt (sodium) to less than 2,300 mg a day (1 teaspoon)
- Exercise at least 30 minutes a day.
